Personal information on Ontario hunters, fishers stored in the United States
Hunting and fishing enthusiasts in Ontario fear the powerful U.S. Homeland Security agency could snoop on their personal information — including firearms details — violating their privacy and creating border hassles.
The issue was raised Wednesday by Progressive Conservative MPP Laurie Scott, who said the Ministry of Natural Resources’ move to contract out hunting and fishing licenses to a Tennessee company is raising alarm bells across the province.
“It’s a big concern,” she said of the new contract that took effect Jan. 1 with a company called Active Outdoors in Nashville, saying she has talked to hunters who are outraged.
“When you call the ministry’s 800 number, you are greeted by a recording that says, ‘Personal information may be stored outside of Canada and is subject to the laws of the jurisdiction where it is stored.”
