New Frabill I-4: Fish 'The Snowpocalypse' In Style

Plano, IL - According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, we’re looking at another bitterly cold and snow-heavy winter. Doom merchants are throwing around words like "Snowpocalypse" and “Snowmageddon." Survivalists are stocking up on water, food and fuel … never a bad idea.
But the end of the world? Probably not. Still, when it comes to ice fishing, you can never be too prepared.

Anglers Encouraged to Register for BPS Lake Simcoe Open NOW!

Orillia Ontario: With less than a month left until Canada’s record setting bass tournament gets underway, Mustang Survival has provided a wonderful incentive for those wishing to compete.   “We are happy that Mustang will supply four MS185 Classic Floater Suits as an added incentive for anglers to register now for Canada’s premier one day bass tournament. That means the Mustang Early Bird Draw Prize will see two teams … all four anglers win one of their premier floater suits valued at almost $400 each,” said David Meadows club president.

To capitalize on this opportunity and to ensure they pay the same entry fee as last year, anglers must register on or before October 10th.

Chasing Bass Rules but an Unexpected Channel Cat for Dinner Ain’t Bad Either!

Once bass season rolls around here in southern Ontario (3rd or 4th Saturday in June depending on the area) there usually aren’t too many occasions when I go out and willingly target another species. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate or enjoy fishing for trout, big pike, muskie or even panfish – but day in and day out until bass closes at the end of November, I’d just as soon fish the best- and in my mind bass are it baby!

Jerkbaits Rule for Ontario’s Waters

For many years ... actually decades now, I have been a big fan of jerkbaits. From the start of bass season until it closes, I will always have at least one tied on and ready to go. Without doubt, my favorite is the Rapala X-Rap as it casts like a bullet and can suspend a couple of meters below the surface if you so desire.  It can be equally effective at catching a quick limit as it can at that kicker fish you need to cash a cheque. The X-Rap is the perfect search bait because even when most bass are shut down, there’s often one ornery one, perturbed enough to not let that uber tempting, injured minnow get away! And fortunately for you, bass often hang out together- so the one that gave himself away, can tell you others might be nearby and cacheable with a slower moving soft bait.

Pike Season Opener in Southern Ontario

The Greater Toronto Area is home to many species of sought after gamefish. Within the Lake Ontario waterfront portion of Canada's most populated region, trout and salmon reign supreme among elite anglers - thanks in no small part to the influx of over one million of these salmonids that are stocked annually by MNR. Rivers from the Ganaraska in the east to the Credit and Bronte in the west offer these anglers remarkable fishing opportunities. Further north well outside of the GTA ... rivers such as the Nottawasaga, Saugeen and Syndenham also produce. This spring has been no exception ... especially with delayed rainbow runs that provided remarkable fishing opportunities even on the regular trout opener (last Saturday in April) for fishing enthusiasts.

2013/14 Ice Fishing Season Rap-Up

Well, here we are in mid April 2014 and another ice fishing season has come and gone. But my, oh my, what a season it was! For many ... it started earlier than ever and lasted longer than they could have even imagined. My buddy Adam for instance began by walking on 3 inches of solid H2O up in Algonquin Park, fishing splake with some buddies on Nov 29 ... just before all fishing closes there between Dec 1 and last Saturday in April. He enjoyed tremendous success in a back country lake ... as you can see here in the photo bellow.

Over 460 people Ice Fish to End MS

March 1, 2014 - Sibbald Point Provincial Park

In only its 4th year, Perchin For MS has become a major event to take note of. On March 1, 2014 the 4th Annual Perchin for MS Ice Fishing event took place at Sibbald Point Provincial Park in the Town of Georgina celebrating another great success.  Dubbed Lake Simcoe's Premier Ice Fishing Event by the fishers themselves, this event has become the place to be in the fishing community. This year saw over 460 competitors coming out for a day of fun and to fish for a cause, a cause near and dear to Doug Poirier the founder of the event.

More Jumbo Perch Thru The Ice

Well yesterday, we enjoyed another fine day on the hardwater chasing yellow perch on Lake Simcoe … undoubtedly one of the finest perch fisheries in all of North America. Today was remarkably similar to last weekend when my son Izaak and I took home about 15 jumbos for about three hours of fishing. Unlike last time though these perch were a little deeper (33-34') and way more finicky.  In fact, if it wasn't for the addition of a bunch of puny little items we brought this time- that we didn't before … we may have walked off the ice empty handed!

Take Advantage of Weather Breaks - Despite the Odds!

Despite one of the most remarkable winters in many decades here in Ontario, there have been several occasions when fishing has been extremely tough. Beautiful thick ice, cold temperatures, plenty of snow cover and a chance to safely access anywhere you like on your favorite lake. Man, you would think the fish would be practically jumping thru your holes. Ah - but with few exceptions, such has not been the case; at least not for many of us hard water fishin fanatics who are quick to admit, "Dang- fishin has been tough!"

Anglers- whether they're hard water or soft water freaks – love to blame the weather and I can be as guilty as the next guy.
