Fishing Line Recycle Depots

For Immediate Release: May 21st 2013
Lake Simcoe-Ontario:
The Aurora Bassmasters are pleased to announce that a total of eight “Fishing Line Recycle Depots” have now been installed around the Lake Simcoe watershed. These receptacles have been strategically placed at popular shore fishing areas for anglers to deposit used fishing line. Throughout the fishing season, volunteers with the bass club will monitor these units, empty and collect used line as required, then once each year, will send the used line to Berkley-Pure Fishing. From there, the line will be recycled and made into Berkley Fish-Habs ... habitat structures that enhance our public fisheries.

About The Line Recycle Depots: These units are approximately one metre long, made from white pvc piping and at the top have an elbow with a an opening slot to deposit used fishing line.  To remove the line, a cap at the bottom is unscrewed and the line drops out. The material to create these units was paid for by the Aurora Bassmasters however this is a partnership project that also involved the Ministry of Natural Resources, Aurora District. Stewardship Rangers ... 17 year old students working for MNR, assembled the fishing line recycle units in the summer of 2012.

Why Install These Units? The Aurora Bassmasters have won several awards over the years for their innovative and often ground breaking conservation efforts. “We recognized that improperly discarded fishing line is not only unsightly garbage, but that it can be hazardous when entangled in birds and waterfowl. We wanted to highlight the need for anglers to properly dispose of their used line, at the source while they’re fishing. So, instead of just throwing fishing line in the garbage, we are now advocating they deposit the line in these recycle depots where it will be put to good use afterwards- thanks to Berkley,”  said David Meadows president of the club.

Locations:

  1. Holland River, Bradford – at the shore fishing area on the southwest side of the river as you enter town from the east on Yonge St.
  2. Lake Simcoe, Belle Ewart/Innisfil – at the public fishing pier beside Lake Simcoe Marina
  3. Lake Simcoe, Barrie - at the shore fishing area right beside the Tiffin Public Boat Launch
  4. Lake Couchiching, Orillia- , on the north side of the main public boat launch in town
  5. Lake Simcoe, Beaverton –at the foot of the public fishing pier in Beaverton Harbor
  6. Lake Simcoe, Jacksons Pt/Georgina –at the shore fishing area just northeast of Bonnie Boats
  7. Lake Simcoe, Keswick/Georgina- at the channel and popular fishing area known as Adeline Park just off Lakeshore Drive

The Aurora Bassmasters would like to thank all the municipalities around the lake for permission to install these units. “We were greeted with enthusiastic support when we approached each of them, and they were thankful for our efforts to maintain clean and safe shorelines for all to enjoy”, concluded Meadows.

Larger quantities of old line (taken from reel-spools when refilling with new line) should still be brought to the Berkley recycle bins found in many tackle shops.
