Over the period of 1991 to 2000, there were 447 deaths associated with activities on ice. Of these, 246 involved snowmobiles, 150 involved non-motorized activity and 51 motorized vehicles. Most of the deaths associated with activities on ice were related to recreational activities. (Canadian Red Cross Society 2006).

Crashing The Bottom

A Lake Trout On Lake Simcoe

Man it was cold! That morning in mid January 2009 we heard it was -35 with the wind chill in Toronto, and we were up along the north shores of Lake Simcoe so it was that much colder. "Perhaps the other guys who decided not to come at the last minute were smarter than we think," my son Izaak said as we headed out into the bitter wind onto the frozen lake. Still, the sunrise was gorgeous … and our hopes were high for yet, another terrific day on the ice.

Ice Safety

As we approach another exciting ice fishing season we anxiously anticipate walking on the hard water yet again.  In our eagerness to get out there though the second it's ready, some of us may forget the basic safety guidelines associated with our favorite winter sport. Being able to 'read' the ice in order to determine its level of safety, can be a invaluable asset for all  ice anglers; especially hard core guys who fish real early and late into the season.
